SolarCity Charges Into Home Efficiency With Admirals Bank ? Mask ...

The solar energy industry was still bemoaning the high upfront costs of rooftop solar installations when SolarCity helped pioneer the solar lease, which has virtually eliminated that hurdle. Now, with financial backing from Admirals Bank, SolarCity has set out to do the same thing for the home energy efficiency upgrade business.

?By making energy-saving measures more accessible and affordable,? said SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive, ?we?re doing for energy efficiency what we?ve done for solar power.?

Taking advantage of the new Boston-based Admirals Bank backing, SolarCity is expanding its energy efficiency service, which it began offering in addition to rooftop solar installations in 2010, to customers in Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Washington, D.C. The company already has 5,000-plus efficiency projects completed or underway in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon and Texas.

?We?re trying to bring our customers a full range of clean, affordable alternatives to utility power,? explained SolarCity spokesperson Jonathan Bass. Electricity generated by fossil fuels for a single home, a federal study found, puts more carbon dioxide into the air than two average cars.

Admirals Bank, a federal savings bank with a history as a home improvement lender, will make available between $2,500 and $15,000 per customer, Bass said. That should readily meet the cost of the typical upgrade which, according to SolarCity Manager of Energy Efficiency Services Levi Blankenship, is between $4,000 and $12,000. That investment, Blankenship added, typically reduces a homeowner?s combined natural gas and electricity costs twenty to 50 percent.

A Department of Energy (DOE) study found that the U.S. spends $241 million yearly on home energy bills. That?s one in five of the dollars the U.S. spends on energy. It is an average of $1,900 per family.

?We saw with solar that if we reduce or eliminate the upfront costs,? Bass explained, ?it makes it available to a new set of customers.? The company?s expectation is that the same thing will happen with energy efficiency.

The SolarCity process begins, Blankenship said, with an on-site home energy evaluation that diagnoses the cause of high utility bills and energy losses. Proprietary SolarCity software does four billion-plus calculations for each home evaluation and produces a report across nine efficiency categories. SolarCity uses the report to prioritize recommended home improvement options based on energy and cost savings.

?Typically,? Blankenship said. ?There two categories of improvements.? Over half a building?s energy consumption is for ?space conditioning,? he explained, ?either heating or cooling. So the building shell, or envelope, is a huge component.?

A SolarCity 250-home analysis, incorporating DOE statistics, found that about $40 of every $100 spent on heating and cooling is lost to duct and air leakage. In their evaluation, SolarCity people identify the amount of ?re-insulation? and ?air sealing? needed ?to retain heat in the winter and keep it out in the summer so that the furnace and air conditioner do not need to run as often.?

Once they are sure the building shell is efficient, Blankenship said, ?we turn our attention to the mechanical equipment itself. The furnace, the air conditioner, the heat pump, the water heater, the equipment that provides conditioned air. We want to be sure it is efficient and sized for the house.?

It is ?the granularity of the software evaluation,? Blankenship added, ?that makes it possible for us to eliminate client and confusion concerns that may have slowed adoption in the past. The software, coupled with the loans that will make it possible to eliminate upfront costs, is really exciting.?

SolarCity?s efficiency financing already supports a range of local energy efficiency loan and rebate programs. The Admirals Bank-backed Home Energy Loan financing option is expected to further reduce and/or eliminate the upfront cost of energy efficiency upgrades.

?We will work with programs that are out there in our service territories and direct our customers to the best option for them,? Bass said. ?But in places where there is no efficiency program, we wanted to give customers the option of evaluations and upgrades.?

SolarCity and Admirals Bank intend to make the loan process as convenient and accessible for customers as possible. Eligible customers will be able to choose between a one-year ?Save Now, Pay Later? option and 3-year or 10-year ?Pay As You Go? options. The one-year option can be interest-free.

?Commonly, there are utility, county, and/or state rebate programs but the rebates don?t get paid immediately. There can be a several month lag.? The one year option gives homeowners time to collect and use the rebates and pay off the balance without incurring interest charges. ?If the loan is repaid within one year,? Bass explained, ?there is no interest.?

?And they start saving energy and money right way,? Blankenship added.

U.S. spending cuts bite in Paul Ryan's home town

JANESVILLE, WI. (Reuters) - Republican Representative Paul Ryan's budget-cutting vision has made him a hero to conservatives across the country. It's less popular in his home town.

As Ryan's proposal to slash taxes and spending started to move through Congress last week, local officials in this humble Rust Belt city scrambled to recover from last year's cutbacks.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development had clawed back $344,000 from the city's affordable-housing fund, so the Janesville Community Development Authority voted to drain its reserves to keep its 525 families in the program.

The city won't have to put anybody out on the street, probably. But there is no cushion left.

Ryan has called for belt-tightening to head off fiscal disaster in the years to come, but Janesville is already familiar with austerity.

There's less money for job training, health clinics and the food bank; higher property taxes and higher car fees; larger school class sizes, crumbling roads, fewer firefighters.

"It's like being in a fight against five or six people. Every time you turn around you're getting punched from a different direction," said City Council President Russ Steeber.

In the 14 years since voters in the southeast corner of Wisconsin first sent him to Congress, Ryan has emerged as perhaps the country's foremost fiscal conservative. Only 42, he is frequently mentioned as a possible vice presidential pick.

His latest budget plan, unveiled Tuesday, will serve as a rallying cry for Republicans as they try to win control of the White House and both chambers of Congress in the November 6 elections.

Democrats hope voters will be spooked by Ryan's proposal to partially privatize Medicare, the popular health plan for retirees.

"When people sent Paul Ryan to Washington, D.C., they certainly didn't send him there to end Medicare," said Democrat Rob Zerban, who hopes to unseat Ryan in the fall.

Ryan's district, which encompasses struggling cities as well as affluent lake resorts and blue-collar Milwaukee suburbs, has grown more Democratic in recent years.

Though voters here backed Democrat Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election, Ryan has continued to win re-election by wide margins and Democratic officials say it will be a challenge to unseat him this year. The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan tip sheet, rates the race "solidly Republican."

CLOSE TIES

Ryan has maintained close ties to this city of 60,000 even as his national celebrity has grown. He returns most weekends to spend time with his wife and three young children and local leaders say they see him regularly out and about.

"He is extremely plugged in," said John Beckford, president of Forward Janesville, a local business group. As in Washington, he is widely admired for tackling the country's long-term debt.

Though Democrats have hammered Ryan on Medicare and tax cuts that would benefit the wealthy, they have devoted less attention to other proposed spending cuts.

Under Ryan's plan, the government would spend $3 trillion less than Obama over the coming 10 years on domestic programs. That's one-third percent less for Medicaid, the health plan for the poor; one-quarter less for transportation, and one-third less for education. Tax breaks and food and housing assistance for the poor would shrink by 16 percent.

His budget, like the rival vision outlined by Obama in February, has no chance of becoming law as long as Democrats and Republicans split power. But no matter who controls Washington after the November elections, continued austerity is likely to be the rule under a 10-year, $1 trillion deficit-reduction plan passed last year.

Even relatively modest reductions hit hard in Janesville, which is still digging out from the closure of a General Motors plant four years ago that left 4,000 people out of work.

Businesses are pushing to widen Interstate 90, an effort that would rely on federal money. Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport also is counting on federal dollars in the next 10 years to cover 90 percent of a planned $5 million runway upgrade.

Federal job training grants helped many of the laid-off GM workers learn new skills at Blackhawk Technical College, and one in five students there currently rely on federal student loans or grants, according to a school official.

Ryan's proposed Medicaid cuts would strain local hospitals, which already lose money on every patient they see under the program.

"Our mission is to provide health services to the communities where we have a presence," said Rich Gruber, a vice president at Mercy Health System. "If I don't have a financial margin, I'm never going to be able to accomplish that mission."

Janesville was hammered by the 2008-2009 recession. The GM plant closure sent shock waves through the ecosystem of parts suppliers and other employers that depended on the massive facility for business.

Food banks and other local charities struggled to keep up as demand swelled and private donations plummeted. The city's rental-assistance program, funded by federal money, stopped accepting new applicants two years ago.

Things are looking up lately. The unemployment rate has fallen to 8.3 percent, still well above the statewide average but well below the March 2009 peak of 13.9 percent. A startup company recently announced plans to build an $80 million medical-isotope plant, and hospitals are expanding.

DIGGING OUT

Still, enormous challenges remain as families struggle to climb back into the middle class.

One in 25 school children was homeless at some point last year, and half qualify for free or reduced lunches. Manufacturers are hiring again, but many of the jobs pay $9 per hour, far short of the $20 to $30 hourly wage paid by GM.

Many workers don't have the communications or math skills that better-paying jobs demand, and federal job training funds are projected to shrink 6 percent to 12 percent in the coming fiscal year. There are 8,000 fewer jobs now than there were a decade ago.

"At one point in time I probably would have said we need to scale back government. Now I see people that are at a loss, they don't know where to turn," said Robert Borremans, the head of the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board, which oversees job-training efforts in Janesville.

Not everyone shares this view. Several local business leaders said they agreed with Ryan's argument that lower taxes and fewer regulations, rather than continued federal spending, would get the economy moving.

Bill Sodemann had to lay off half of his employees at his telecommunications firm during the height of the recession. As head of the Janesville school board, he's made painful decisions there as well.

The school district had to cut 110 of its 1,400 staff positions last year, raise class sizes and hike fees for high school sports after the state legislature slashed its contribution. More painful cuts loom next year.

'LIKE A DRUG DEALER'

Federal contributions also fell last year by 33 percent as stimulus money dried up. Sodemann says the burst of federal money only postponed the district's day of reckoning.

"They give you money and hook you on a program and say, 'OK, now it's gone, you fend for it," he said. "It's kind of like a drug dealer, I guess."

Sodemann points to a new pre-kindergarden program as an additional drain on resources. Parents who want to put their kids in the program should pay for it themselves, he said.

"Just because it's beneficial doesn't mean government should pay for it," he said.

Several miles south of Sodemann's downtown office, four-year-old children enrolled in the program stream off a playground into a cheery day-care facility run by a nonprofit group, Community Action Inc.

Early-childhood programs like these have been shown to boost school performance and reduce crime. More than two-thirds of the program's is covered by federal subsidies, which allow parents to enter the workforce rather than remaining at home and mired in poverty, nonprofit officials say.

Community Action officials choose their words carefully when asked about Ryan. He's willing to listen to their concerns, they say, even as he makes clear that his focus is on federal fiscal issues rather than the immediate needs of his community.

"It's a question that doesn't come to the top of his list," said Lisa Forseth, Community Action's executive director.

Donna Hays, a nurse practitioner who runs the nonprofit's women's health center, is more direct as she puts on her lab coat and stethoscope.

"We sometimes have to ask him if he remembers where he came from," Hays said.

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? A bill that Republican leaders were promoting as the centerpiece of their job-creation agenda has instead turned into one of their biggest headaches, thanks largely to tea party conservatives who want to get the federal government out of transportation programs and hand them over to the states.

The House and Senate are heading toward a showdown next week that could result in a cutoff of federal highway and transit aid to states just as the spring construction season starts. The government's authority to spend money from the trust fund that pays for transportation programs, as well as its power to levy the federal gasoline and diesel taxes that feed the fund expire on March 31. Democrats estimate as many as 1.8 million jobs supported by those programs are at risk.

Neither side wants a shutdown, but House Speaker John Boehner has been unable to recruit enough Republicans to pass the GOP's overhaul of federal highway programs. The biggest group of holdouts are conservatives who want highway programs to be paid for entirely by federal gas and diesel taxes even though that might mean a nearly 40 percent cut in spending, because revenue from those taxes has declined.

Boehner's fallback plan is to pass a 90-day extension of current programs in order to give the House more time to line up votes for a comprehensive bill. But Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Thursday he's "not inclined" to go along with an extension. He urged the House to instead take up a $109 billion bill the Senate passed last week by a bipartisan, 74 to 22 vote.

"It's a good bill," Reid said. "But over in a big, dark hole we now refer to as the tea-party dominated House of Representatives ... they destroyed their own bill, and now they won't agree to take up our bill." House Republicans, he said, "are going to have to feel the heat of the American people."

GOP Rep. Mike Pence, who favors "devolution" of responsibility for transportation to state and local governments, said he's undecided about the five-year, $260 billion GOP bill because he's concerned that it isn't paid for entirely with user fees like fuel taxes and because he doesn't like the way it divvies up highway aid among states.

"I have no doubt the state of Indiana could do a better job for taxpayers and for drivers than the federal government in maintaining our roads in Indiana," said Pence, who is running for governor. "I supported the last highway bill. I think that roads mean jobs. But it's essential that we produce a bill that is both fair and fiscally responsible."

The House bill actually takes a large step toward giving states far more flexibility over how they spend federal aid, said Rep. James Lankford, R-Okla., a member of the House Transportation Committee. Currently, about 80 percent of state highway programs are paid for with federal aid and 20 percent with state money. Lankford, who is supporting the bill even though he also wants to cede more authority to the states, said he'd eventually like to see that ratio reversed.

Boehner, R-Ohio, blamed his difficulty in passing the bill on the House's ban on "earmarks" ? provisions that used to be tucked into bills that direct spending to lawmakers' pet projects.

"When it comes to things like the (last long-term) highway bill, which used to be very bipartisan, you have to understand it was greased to be bipartisan with 6,371 earmarks," Boehner told reporters. "You take the earmarks away, and guess what? All of a sudden people are beginning to look at the real policy behind it."

Boehner wants to use revenue from expanded oil drilling to help make up a shortfall between federal fuel tax revenues and transportation program spending. But the drilling proposal raises only about $4.3 billion over 10 years, while the gap between revenue and spending in his bill is more than $40 billion.

"The problem with the Senate bill is that it doesn't address the issue of rising gas prices and energy," Boehner said. "We believe that if we're going to reauthorize the highway bill, American energy production ought to be a critical part of it."

Several Republican lawmakers said they expect the Senate to go along with the House's 90-day extension despite Reid's hesitation.

New Mercury Images from MESSENGER Spacecraft

This is Mercury, but not as our eyes can see it.

The striking image is one of many to come from the Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry, and Ranging spacecraft, or MESSENGER. We covered the craft as it entered orbit of the solar system's first planet one year ago, on March 17, 2011. In its first Earth year of work, MESSENGER sent home an incredible amount of data to help scientists understand what this scalding world is made of and how it has changed over a few billion years. It also sent home plenty of incredible images, such as this one.

What you're seeing is the ancient volcanic plains located in Mercury's northern high latitudes. The picture is color-coded by elevation: Purple represents the lowest point, white the highest. The MESSENGER team released this image, and the other below, in the journal Science today to go along with two new studies of the planet based on the spacecraft's data.

In the first, researchers used the laser altimeter on board the spacecraft to create this topographic map. What it tells them is that because the surface is so dominated by volcanic plains, the first planet must have been geophysically active for much of its life. In the second study, scientists created what they're calling the first accurate model of Mercury's gravitational field, which, combined with other factors, tells them about its internal structure. According to that team, if you looked at the radius of Mercury (imagine a line from the very center of the planet to its surface), the core would extend 85 percent of the way, which is further than scientists previously believed.

Because its first year was so successful, MESSENGER has been renewed for another year. So hopefully we'll see even striking images of one of the solar system's least-known worlds.

Done Deal: Zynga Gets ?Draw Something? Phenom By Acquiring OMGPOP. (We?re Hearing $210M.)

draw-something-bathtubZynga agreed to buy OMGPOP, the maker of massive Pictionary-like hit Draw Something, winning out over several other large gaming companies who had taken a look at the deal. Zynga didn't disclose the price but we're hearing $180 million upfront plus a $30 million earnout. The announcement confirms the original scoop I had on this deal on Monday. So why this price? It's complicated. On the one hand, if Zynga lost, it was probably going to do a "Draw With Friends" anyway. That would have split the available market with OMGPOP, a situation we've seen when Zynga has launched titles like Dream Zoo, Dream Pet House and Dream Tower. Plus, OMGPOP has only had just over a month of runway to evaluate its earnings potential and the mobile gaming market is notoriously fickle. Games that have gone up like Tap Zoo, which held a top 10 grossing rank for about a year, have come down. Also, if you look at the way Draw Something monetizes, it's monetization model is front-loaded with paid app downloads and durable in-app purchases like color packs.

Apple steps up commitment to fight fraud in App Store

New security threats and instances of fraud in Apple?s iTunes App Store have caused the company to commit to work on raising security measures in the online portal.

According to a report from The New York Times, a wave of fraud reports are sweeping through App Store accounts, with thousands of users lodging online complaints with Apple claiming that they?ve received App Store charges for things they haven?t purchased. More than 100 people took to Twitter to complain about such fraud just in the last week, the NYT story states, with one user claiming his account was billed more than $437 in in-app purchases he didn?t make.

As Fierce Mobile Content points out, fraud against users isn?t the only way that the less-than-honest are using the App Store to make money. Various developers have been dealing with App Store rip-offs of their games for years, with carbon-copy apps appearing in the store and lifting the originals? art assets and more. For other developers, there?s a constant war against fake apps that attempt to use a popular app?s name to confuse and trick buyers looking for the real deal. That sort of thing happened (and continues to happen) with the popular Temple Run, which has seen imitators such as Temple Jump attempting to syphon sales with knock-offs.

There are other troubles with fraud in the App Store as well, such as some developers and publishers using fake downloads to artificially boost their rankings on Apple?s App Store charts. Apple said in a statement that it would be working to shore up security in its App Store on all these fronts, and urged users experiencing issues with the payment system, or any sort of suspicious activity, to report them to their financial institutions immediately.

Apple?s App Store just blew past the 25 billion download mark, and currently houses better than 550,000 iOS apps ? so some fishiness with copied apps and fakes is bound to occur. And the unfortunate consequence of Apple?s success is that it makes the iTunes App Store and the iOS ecosystem in general a pretty big target. Hackers and scam artists are attracted to working on the iPhone and iPad for the same reason as legitimate developers ? it?s a market filled with users in which they can make money.

But any improvements Apple can bring to its walled garden?s security should be welcome, because while Apple?s App Store is huge and expansive, it?s pretty well defined by Apple?s control. That has its benefits, like making it easy for developers to make their apps work for all of Apple?s mobile devices, and those benefits should apply to security as well. After all, if developers and customers have to play by Apple?s rules, they should at least be able to expect Apple to enforce those rules and protect the ecosystem. Hopefully the one benefit that will come out of such security issues is greater dedication to eliminating them on Apple?s side.

Air Force Office of Scientific Research

On March 6, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in Arlington, Va., hosted a presentation by Dr. Chad Mirkin from Northwestern University

ARLINGTON, Va. -- On March 6, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research in Arlington, Va., hosted a presentation by Dr. Chad Mirkin from Northwestern University.

Professor Mirkin is a chemist and a world-renowned nanoscience expert who is known for his development of nanoparticle-based biodetection schemes, the invention of spherical nucleic acids (SNAs) and Dip-Pen Nanolithography (DPN), and his contributions to supramolecular chemistry, nanoelectronics, and nanooptics. He is the author of over 480 manuscripts, holds over 440 patents and applications, and is the founder of three companies, which specialize in commercializing nanotechnology applications.

Dr. Mirkin's presentation was part of a continuing series of events planned throughout the coming year as part of AFOSR's 60th anniversary celebration and was scheduled during AFOSR's annual Spring Review program, taking advantage of an audience from numerous science and technology organizations holding wide-ranging scientific and engineering interests.

Dr. Mirkin informed and entertained a large gathering of attendees with a presentation regarding the history and current efforts in the ever-widening and important field of nanotechnology. The talk was also broadcast live over the web, enhancing AFOSR outreach efforts, with questions from the virtual audience being fielded in real time via email and Twitter.

Dr. Mirkin began his talk by noting that his field is complicated by having strong roots in both real science and science fiction and that his early years were devoted to a couple of very aggressive, field challenging, and field changing ideas. But Dr. Mirkin also noted that without the support of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, his outside of the box ideas would have never been realized. With AFOSR funding, his early concepts have evolved into components of what is today the basis for [worldwide industries. At Northwestern University alone, the International Institute for Nanotechnology features a $600 million research and infrastructure program with over 240 contributing faculty and with over 500 post-doctoral and graduate student researchers.

A basic research investigator funded by AFOSR since 1997, Dr. Mirkin pioneered the field of Dip-Pen Nanolithography (DPN) with his seminal research highlighted in the journal Science in January 1999. DPN is a technology that builds nanoscale structures and patterns by drawing molecules directly onto a substrate. This process was achieved by employing an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), the tip of which has the innate capability to precisely place items and draw lines at the nanoscale level. The Atomic Force Microscope was basically an extremely small paint brush. Mirkin's fundamental contribution was recognizing that it could be used to print structures on a surface through materials- rather than energy- delivery though with the latter being the approach taken by all previous researchers.

Since 1999, the Mirkin DPN process has changed dramatically. His current inventions have eliminated the need for cantilevers and rely on arrays of soft pyramids made in the form of an elastomeric stamp adhered to a transparent flat backing layer. This Polymer Pen Lithography (PPL) technique permits a Massively Parallel Dip-Pen Nanolithography capability resulting in high resolution, high throughput and mask-free nanofabrication. By putting thermal and electrostatic actuators on the pens, it allows for the specific control of individual or group pen placement, so that highly customized structures can be made. In subsequent years, those highly customized structures and related enhanced procedures have blossomed into a wide variety of research interests, to include: biomedical and human performance applications, environmental sensors/remediation materials, production of electronics/photonics materials, security devices, energy harvesting and storage applications, and, of course, sophisticated nanolithography and nanofabrication tools.

In addition to his work with DPN, Dr. Mirkin highlighted a current program emphasis regarding programmable atoms, which employs spherical nucleic acids (SNAs, spherical particles coated with a dense layer of highly oriented DNA) to literally fabricate new crystal structures on command. These particles also form the basis for diagnostic tests that allow one to screen chemical and biological markers and literally measure intercellular genetic content in live cells, in real time.

Lastly, Dr. Mirkin explained the invention and development of a process for doing lithography on a nanowire, otherwise known as On-Wire Lithography or OWL. The utility of a nanowire derives from its dimensions and composition. OWL allows one to selectively create gaps and disk architectures along the long wire axis. The result is the ability to create nanostructures that have properties not associated with materials made via conventional synthesis and devices that can be used to make fundamental measurements on individual molecules. OWL has been used for the design and fabrication of novel disk arrays that have optimized Raman hot spots and can be used for the labeling and taggant processes for biological systems and even the construction of catalytic nano-rotors.

Dr. Mirkins cutting edge review enlightened the audience about a future that is inexorably affected by the many advances in nanolithography and the many advantages they offer. New nanolithography based platforms available for basic research; citing the ability to accomplish materials by design; the promise of single entity/non-toxic gene regulation agents; routes to compact power generation, conversion and storage systems. In addition, a new generation of integrated electronics and photonics; ultra-sensitive and specific sensor systems; and new materials for overt and covert tagging and authentication have their genesis in this technology.

It was on 29 December 1959 that renowned physicist and Nobel laureate Richard P. Feynman delivered his famous talk entitled, "Theres Plenty of Room at the Bottom." In this lecture he addressed the problem of manipulating and controlling things on a small scale, and the enormous amounts of information that can be carried or placed in an exceedingly small space. Although it took about forty years for the appropriate practical technology to arrive at that capability, AFOSR assisted a talented research chemist in helping to not only realize Feynman's vision, but to move far beyond it. Dr. Mirkin concluded his remarks by stating: "I would not be here today if it were not for the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. It's been a fantastic journey."

Obesity and Weight Loss | Focus On Fitness Health and Wellness

In the U.S., 68% of adults age 20 and over are overweight or obese, while 31.7% of the nation?s children and adolescents age two to 19 are overweight or obese.*? Obesity contributes to six of the ten leading causes of death in America, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers and high blood pressure.**

These statistics are unreal. ?What happened to the American diet that went so wrong. ?Over half of American adults over 20 are overweight or obese and children?s obesity is on the rise. ?Our society has been conditioned to be obese or overweight and now companies are making millions of dollars on supposedly showing you how to lose the weight. ?It almost seems like this epidemic was created on purpose. ?Not only are weight loss companies making millions but doctors are also. ?Not only weight loss doctors but oncologists, endocrinologists, and cardiologists to name a few.

?

There are many reasons why we have this problem in America. ?I have been in the Wellness industry for over 20 years and have helped many overweight clients. ?I also have a personal battle with weight. ?Below, I?ve listed some of the most common issues I?ve come across during my years of dealing with weight loss clients as well as myself.

  1. Sugar/carbohydrate cravings
  2. Food allergies
  3. Lack of willpower
  4. Low self-esteem
  5. Lack of energy
  6. Don?t know where to start
  7. No support system
  8. Can?t exercise
  9. Limited financially
  10. Lack of food knowledge
  11. Disease
  12. Stress

All of these issues have to be dealt with in weight loss. ?It?s an education process as well as a physical and mental make-over.

It?s that time of year when every weight loss program or product is advertised in the media 24/7. ?Beware! ?All programs/products do not work for all people. ?You are an individual. ?Learn your body. ?What makes your body tick? ?What does your body respond to? ?There are lab tests that can give you an idea of what is beneficial for your body. ?Your blood type is also a great way to figure out good/bad foods. ?Food allergies, hormonal issues, thyroid health, inflammatory issues can all be catapulted by the wrong foods. ?Foods that are beneficial for others may not be beneficial to you. ?Wheat/gluten intolerances and allergies are very common and play a big part in weight gain as well as some fruits and vegetables. ?This has to be established in the very beginning of a program. ?Supplementation is also very important. ?Are there any deficiencies? ?This could affect hormones as well as digestive issues to name a few. ?Many programs do not take this information into consideration when creating a nutrition plan. ?Most diets are very generic. ?Eating less will cause weight loss in the beginning but if you are eating foods that are not good for your body, eventually the weight loss will stop and you will not have healthy weight loss. ?The body responds to change. ?If you suddenly lower your intake and begin exercising, you will see a change. ?It?s inevitable. ?The key is to continue losing until you reach your goal and then sustaining it. ?This will not happen if you are eating the wrong foods and again, you will not be healthy.

There is a program out there for everyone. ?There are so many programs because there are so many body systems. ?You?re bound to find a program that works for you. ?It?s a numbers game. ?Look at the success rates for the larger programs. ?A successful weight loss is one that sustains the loss for at least 5 years. ?Not many people can say that they have kept the weight off for 5 years. ?I know because I?ve been through it and I?ve worked with many clients who were on these programs and couldn?t maintain it. ?You have to learn your body and learn what it needs. ?That means an individual diet and exercise routine. ?Our bodies handle stress differently and therefore an individualized exercise program has to agree with your body as well. ?If you have a system that wants a slow, easier workout and you are doing hard, more explosive workouts, your body will probably not respond the way you want it to.

These are just a few issues that you should be aware of when looking at weight loss. ?Do your homework, be realistic and the goal should be for health as well as the loss.

See Focus On Fitness Health and Wellness?for assistance in choosing an individualized weight loss program that will give you the results you want as well as the knowledge to sustain it. ?You will also learn how to lead a lifestyle of health and wellness.

Consuming Healthy Weight Loss Shakes | AHIP's Health Care Plans

Many people who like to get rid of excess pounds go for supplements. While there are products in pill form, others come powdered that have to be mixed with water prior to consuming them. Make sure that you stick to healthy weight loss shakes to be sure your well-being isn?t placed on the line for wanting to look great.

Basically, you have two options when you intend to take these products. There are meal replacement ones and those which supply protein. Those two are completely different from one another, although people who like to attain their dream figure may go for any of them. The choice usually depends on the diet plan and workout routine they have.

A meal replacement shake, just like how it?s called suggests, is suited for replacing a single meal. It contains a blend of carbohydrates, protein, dietary fiber and other essential nutrients. One serving can be considered as a full meal. Experts say that you should replace 1 to 2 meals with this product on a daily basis.

The protein supplement type contains mostly protein. It cannot be considered as a meal replacement. It usually comes from various sources like whey, soy, casein and eggs. Many athletes, body builders and fitness enthusiasts go for such. Those who like to slim down also take it as it?s effective in suppressing the appetite.

If you wish to try your hands on any of these products, be careful to read the label thoroughly. Steer clear of anything that?s heavily processed. There are products which has lots of sugar to improve the taste. If you find that the flavor is bland, you may mix the product with fruits to attain a more pleasing taste.

Even when using healthy weight loss shakes, it?s still important to consider a lifestyle change if you wish to enjoy long-term benefits. These products are not designed to be used forever. Prevent gaining back the pounds you lost when you stop taking them through proper exercising and right diet.
