Five US urban counties lead 'Terror Hot Spots' list, but rural areas not exempt

ScienceDaily (Jan. 31, 2012) ? Nearly a third of all terrorist attacks from 1970 to 2008 occurred in just five metropolitan U.S. counties, but events continue to occur in rural areas, spurred on by domestic actors, according to a report recently published by researchers in the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START), a Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Center of Excellence based at the University of Maryland.

The research was conducted at Maryland and the University of Massachusetts-Boston.

The largest number of events clustered around major cities:

  • Manhattan, New York (343 attacks)
  • Los Angeles County, Calif. (156 attacks)
  • Miami-Dade County, Fla. (103 attacks)
  • San Francisco County, Calif. (99 attacks)
  • Washington, D.C. (79 attacks).

While large, urban counties such as Manhattan and Los Angeles have remained hot spots of terrorist activities across decades, the START researchers discovered that smaller, more rural counties such as Maricopa County, Ariz. -- which includes Phoenix -- have emerged as hot spots in recent years as domestic terrorism there has increased.

The START researchers found that 65 of the nation's 3,143 counties were "hot spots" of terrorism.

They defined a "hot spot" as a county experiencing a greater than the average number of terrorist attacks, that is, more than six attacks across the entire time period (1970 to 2008).

"Mainly, terror attacks have been a problem in the bigger cities, but rural areas are not exempt," said Gary LaFree, director of START and lead author of the new report.

"The main attacks driving Maricopa into recent hot spot status are the actions of radical environmental groups, especially the Coalition to Save the Preserves. So, despite the clustering of attacks in certain regions, it is also clear that hot spots are dispersed throughout the country and include places as geographically diverse as counties in Arizona, Massachusetts, Nebraska and Texas," LaFree added.

Concentration of Fatal Terrorist Attacks in U.S., 1970 -- 2008 Click for hi-res image

TYPES OF ATTACKS: LaFree, a professor of criminology at the University of Maryland, and his co-author Bianca Bersani, assistant professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts-Boston, also assessed whether certain counties were more prone to a particular type of terrorist attack.

They found that while a few counties experienced multiple types of terrorist attacks, for most eattacks were motivated by a single ideological type. For example, Lubbock County, Texas, only experienced extreme right-wing terrorism while the Bronx, New York, only experienced extreme left-wing terrorism.

Time Trends:

LaFree and Bersani also found time trends in terrorist attacks.

"The 1970s were dominated by extreme left-wing terrorist attacks," Bersani said. "Far left-wing terrorism in the U.S. is almost entirely limited to the 1970s with few events in the 1980s and virtually no events after that."

Ethno-national/separatist terrorism was concentrated in the 1970s and 1980s, religiously motivated attacks occurred predominantly in the 1980s, extreme right-wing terrorism was concentrated in the 1990s and single issue attacks were dispersed across the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, according to the new report.

To define the ideological motivations, LaFree and Bersani used START's Profiles of Perpetrators of Terrorism -- United States (Miller, Smarick and Simone, 2011), which briefly describes ideological motivations as:

  • Extreme Right-Wing: groups that believe that one's personal and/or national "way of life" is under attack and is either already lost or that the threat is imminent (for some the threat is from a specific ethnic, racial, or religious group), and believe in the need to be prepared for an attack either by participating in paramilitary preparations and training or survivalism. Groups may also be fiercely nationalistic (as opposed to universal and international in orientation), anti-global, suspicious of centralized federal authority, reverent of individual liberty, and believe in conspiracy theories that involve grave threat to national sovereignty and/or personal liberty.
  • Extreme Left-Wing: groups that want to bring about change through violent revolution rather than through established political processes. This category also includes secular left-wing groups that rely heavily on terrorism to overthrow the capitalist system and either establish "a dictatorship of the proletariat" (Marxist-Leninists) or, much more rarely, a decentralized, non-hierarchical political system (anarchists).
  • Religious: groups that seek to smite the purported enemies of God and other evildoers, impose strict religious tenets or laws on society (fundamentalists), forcibly insert religion into the political sphere (e.g., those who seek to politicize religion, such as Christian Reconstructionists and Islamists), and/or bring about Armageddon (apocalyptic millenarian cults; 2010: 17). For example, Jewish Direct Action, Mormon extremist, Jamaat-al-Fuqra, and Covenant, Sword and the Arm of the Lord (CSA) are included in this category.
  • Ethno-Nationalist/Separatist: regionally concentrated groups with a history of organized political autonomy with their own state, traditional ruler, or regional government, who are committed to gaining or regaining political independence through any means and who have supported political movements for autonomy at some time since 1945.
  • Single Issue: groups or individuals that obsessively focus on very specific or narrowly-defined causes (e.g., anti-abortion, anti-Catholic, anti-nuclear, anti-Castro). This category includes groups from all sides of the political spectrum.

Diddy 'Playful But Serious' About Machine Gun Kelly Arrest

'I talked to Puff today, and he's like, 'It's all good,' ' Bad Boy rapper tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman

When Diddy first announced that he signed Machine Gun Kelly to Bad Boy Records, he said he wanted the Cleveland, Ohio, breakout to stay "true to himself." Since the deal, the "Wild Boy" rapper doesn't seem to have changed very much. And after his arrest for misdemeanor disorderly conduct on Sunday morning, Puff didn't seem too bent out of shape.

"@machinegunkelly where the f--- are you at? Are you ok? Do you need Bail or a lawyer?????!! Eveyrone hit him to see if he's ok," Diddy wrote jokingly on Twitter. "@machinegunkelly WtF!!!!!! Call me at miami crib now!!!!! Everyone hit him and tell him to call me NOW!!!!! Pls thanks!!!!"

"You can tell he's, like, playful with it, but there's a serious tone behind [it]," Machine Gun Kelly told MTV News on Monday (January 30) about his boss' reaction to the incident in a Florida club that led to the arrest. "I talked to Puff today, and he's like, 'It's all good. Do what you do. You did what you had to do.' "

Diddy was very understanding — that is, until he misread a tweet while on the phone with Kells, which led him to believe his new protégé was put in cuffs twice this weekend. On Friday night, one of MGK's friends was caught drunk driving and got into a car crash; Kells was not present, but try explaining that to Diddy.

"He thought I was in the car too, so he thought I got arrested twice. It was like the first arrest was cool, like, all right, he'll let it slide. But when he [thought it was two arrests], he was like, 'What the f---? You got arrested two times? Something is wrong with you, man,' " MGK said, imitating one of Puff's patented tantrums. "He was, like, spazzing out. I think all the label is on edge about how we rock."

This wasn't Kelly's first arrest either. Back in August 2011, the raging rapper was locked up and charged with disorderly conduct after police said he organized a flash mob in a Cleveland mall.

After this latest incident, Kelly promises no more run-ins with the law. He posted $100 bond and fired this message off on Twitter before heading off to New York City: "Thank you Florida for ragin this week. Lookin forward to seeing every state during this spring/summer tour (no more handcuffs tho!)"

Biden: GOP candidates promoting Bush-era policies (AP)

ROCHESTER, N.H. ? Republican presidential hopefuls are blatantly focused on advancing economic policies that favor the wealthy over most Americans, giving voters in the 2012 election a clear choice, Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday.

Biden told reporters there's no discussion in the Republican campaign about compassionate conservatism, or wanting to save Medicare or education as in past campaigns.

"The reason I think this race is going to be so clear is that for the first time in my career, Republicans aren't hiding the ball," he said.

"They're putting forward a political philosophy that is absolutely straight-forward... The way it's going to work is to not only keep the tax cuts for the wealthy but increase tax cuts for the wealthy, and the way to move forward is to deregulate Wall Street."

Biden said Republicans want to "unshackle" businesses by eliminating regulations, but doing so would shift risk to the average American instead. He argued that reasonable regulation of business and Wall Street is necessary.

Biden was making his seventh trip to New Hampshire as vice president. Obama carried New Hampshire in the 2008 general election, but the state is expected to be heavily contested in the fall.

On Thursday, Biden spoke to employees of Albany Engineered Composites and Safran USA, two companies that used a labor department grant to design a training program with Great Bay Community College to help workers acquire advanced manufacturing skills. He cited the program as an example of the Obama administration's efforts to encourage companies to expand in the United States rather than of overseas.

"Our job is to encourage," he said. "The government doesn't produce jobs, it produces incentives," he said.

Biden said after years of economic distress, "Americans are tired of being tired," and added that he's tired as well.

"I am tired of the naysayers. I'm tired of people telling me America isn't going to come back," he said. "We start off better positioned than any nation in the world to be the dominant economic force of the 21st century."

Some DODDS sports events in Italy postponed due to strike

By Kent Harris

Stars and Stripes

Published: January 26, 2012

AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy ? A nationwide truck strike that has resulted in highway closures and concerns of fuel shortages at gasoline stations also led DODDS-Europe to postpone some sports competitions scheduled in Italy over the weekend.

High school basketball games involving Aviano vs. Marymount International and Vicenza vs. American Overseas School of Rome scheduled for this weekend have been postponed, and Naples? contest with Florence International also scheduled for this weekend has been canceled, according to DODDS-Europe Athletic Director Karen Seadore. Games between American School of Milan and Sigonella are still scheduled for the coming weekend, she said.

A wrestling meet Saturday at Aviano will continue without half its scheduled participants, she said. Vilseck, Germany; Naples; AOSR; and Sigonella are not sending wrestlers. However, Vicenza; Black Forest Academy in Kandern, Germany; and a small contingent from Rota, Spain, still planto attend. Vilseck will now wrestle at Heidelberg on Saturday.

Truckers began their strike Monday in protest over rising fuel prices and high road tolls. It is supposed to end Friday. Since American high school basketball matchups are Friday-Saturday affairs and some wrestling squads would be traveling on Fridays, the cancelations made sense, Seadore said.

?Obviously, we do not want our kids to be in buses and stranded on the autostrada,? she said.

Vilseck canceled after being told that the Brenner Pass, one of the main routes connecting Italy with Austria and its neighbors to the north, had been blockaded by the striking truckers, Seadore said.

The strike has also led some Americans based in Italy to take precautions. Aviano Air Base and other U.S. installations have tried to keep servicemembers updated on local conditions.

Senior Airman Creighton Daetwyler, filling his car Thursday afternoon, brought along a 19-gallon container to fill.

He said the strike ?hasn?t impacted me yet, and I?m hoping with this container it won?t.?

Annette Fornier, a public affairs officer for U.S. Army Garrison Vicenza, said there was ?no indication? of gas shortages outside the base. But she said soldiers have been advised to keep their tanks at least half full.

Ajdezi Safet, who works at the Agip station where Daetwyler was filling up in Aviano, said his station should have gasoline through the weekend, but also recommended that drivers not let their tanks get close to empty.

A message posted on the NSA Naples Facebook page Thursday stated, in part: ?We are hearing plenty of reports that many gas stations have run out of unleaded fuel again.?

A report filed by ANSA, the Italian news service, said the strike was continuing Thursday despite some concessions by Italy?s government.

Long lines to bid farewell to Paterno (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? They stood outside for hours on a winter afternoon, waiting to pay their respects to the late Joe Paterno. The line snaked down a long block on the Penn State campus.

Inside a campus spiritual center, the coach's body lay in a closed, hardwood casket topped by a spray of white roses. About six feet away sat a stylized black-and-white picture of the man who became lovingly known on campus as "JoePa," smiling and peering out through his trademark thick-rimmed glasses.

Three days of public mourning began Tuesday for a Penn State community already racked by months of turmoil. The 85-year-old Paterno ? a Hall of Fame coach and the face of the university ? died Sunday of lung cancer. He had been ousted just days before learning of his diagnosis in November, forced out of his job in the wake of child sex-abuse charges against a former assistant.

"We're not going to focus on the bad, we're going to pull together and focus on the good," said Brittany Yingling, 23, of Altoona, donning a blue Penn State knit cap with "Paterno" in bold white letters emblazoned on the front. "He's going to leave a lasting legacy on so many people."

And thousands showed up, lining a main campus artery for a chance to make the walk, single file, past Paterno's casket, which had an "honor guard" of two Penn State players ? one past and one present. Some mourners stopped for a moment of reflection, or to genuflect in the interfaith hall.

Others fought back tears and sniffles. The only other sounds were the clicks from media photographers, taking occasional pictures.

Jay Paterno, one of the coach's sons, was still shaking hands with the well-wishers when police shut down the visitation at 10:45 p.m. EST, telling a handful of people on their way in that they could come back early Wednesday morning.

Paterno won 409 games and two national championships over his 46-year career admired by peers as much for its longevity as its success. Paterno also took as much pride in the program's graduation rates, often at or close to the top of the Big Ten.

"I came to pay my respects to a great man, that has nothing to do with victories," said Paterno's longtime assistant and defensive coordinator, Tom Bradley. "A lot of his victories people don't even know about."

Large windows bathed the white-walled hall at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center in light on a cloudy day. Some of Paterno's family attend services at the center.

Members of the public were preceded by the family, including two of Paterno's sons. Scott Paterno and Jay ? the former Nittany Lions quarterback coach ? thanked many of the visitors before they exited the building.

"Going in there, waiting two hours in line, it was worth every second of it," said Rob Gressinger, a Penn State junior. "I've lost all my grandparents and the feeling is the exact same thing ... Feels like you lost one of your own."

Also paying respects privately Tuesday morning were former and current players and coaches. Members of the current team wore dark suits and arrived in three blue Penn State buses, the same ones that once carried Paterno and the team to games at Beaver Stadium on fall Saturdays.

Among the former players was Mike McQueary. As a graduate assistant to Paterno in 2002, he went to the coach saying he had witnessed former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky assaulting a boy in the shower at the Penn State football building. Paterno relayed that to his bosses ? including the head of campus police ? but university trustees felt he should have done more, and it played into their decision to oust the longtime coach on Nov. 9. That came four days after Sandusky was charged with child sex-abuse counts.

Dressed in a blue coat and tie with a white shirt, the school colors, McQueary was among those at an event that stretched well into Tuesday night. McQueary declined comment after leaving the viewing.

Earlier Tuesday, former Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers great Franco Harris, a vocal critic of the university trustees, also came to say goodbye. Others included NFL receivers Deon Butler and Jordan Norwood, Norwood's father and Baylor assistant coach Brian Norwood and former quarterback Daryll Clark ? who also served as an honor guard.

Texans receiver Bryant Johnson, a nine-year NFL veteran, said he decided to attend Penn State out of high school in Baltimore because "he wanted to play for a legendary coach."

"I wanted to play for someone that instilled the values that he believed in," Johnson said. "I wanted to play for someone who believed in guys graduating."

Paterno was beloved as much by others in the community for his philanthropic efforts, such as donating millions back to the university for projects including the campus library bearing the family name. Paterno Library sits a short walk across the street from the spiritual center.

"He did so much for this town and school and the students. It wasn't all football," said Martha Edwards of Jersey Shore, Pa. She isn't a graduate but decided to attend anyway.

"Right over there is the library with his name on it," she said. "Nobody comes any better than him."

There is another public viewing Wednesday at the interfaith center, and after that Paterno's family will hold a private funeral and procession through State College.

On Thursday, the school's basketball arena will be the site of a public service called "A Memorial for Joe." Tickets were quickly snapped up for the event, even though there was a two-per-person limit for those ordering.

Stocks set to slip in hesitant market

By msnbc.com news services

Stocks are set to slip Wednesday as the market continues to show signs of fatigue after a strong run from late last year.

Apple's quarterly results on Tuesday blew past Wall Street's expectations after U.S. consumers snapped up near-unprecedented numbers of iPhones and iPads, sending its shares up 8 percent into record territory. Apple was up 7.7 percent to $453 in pre-market trading.

The results were a standout in what has otherwise been a fairly lackluster earnings season. So far 58 percent of companies have beat forecasts while at this stage in the third quarter earnings season, 70 percent beat forecasts.

"Up until now there has been pockets of weakness in a handful companies that have sparked concern among investors," said Andre Bakhos, director of market analytics at Lek Securities in New York.

But he added that lack of direction in the market this week was more likely due to a 22 percent run-up since October lows and that the market was poised to move higher as the economy improved and Europe contained its debt crisis.

"This market is setting itself up for a potent upside move," he said.

The U.S. Federal Reserve, which is holding its regular monetary policy meeting, looks set to keep monetary policy on hold on Wednesday, even as it releases forecasts expected to show interest rates will be near zero for at least two more years.

Roche Holding AG is offering $5.7 billion in cash to buy U.S. gene sequencing company Illumina Inc in a hostile takeover bid that marks a major play by the Swiss drugmaker into the gene technology field. Illumina rose 37 percent to $51.50 in pre-market trade.

U.S. President Barack Obama used his last State of the Union speech before the November election to paint himself as the champion of the middle class, by demanding higher taxes for millionaires and tight reins on Wall Street.

The National Association of Realtors issues Pending Home Sales for December at 10 a.m. (1500 GMT). Economists expect a 1.0 percent fall compared with a 7.3 percent rise in the previous month.

Nordic budget carrier Norwegian Air Shuttle ordered 222 narrow-body aircraft worth a total of $21.5 billion at list prices on Wednesday. It split its order between Boeing Corp and Airbus, part of EADS.

Diversified U.S. manufacturer Textron Inc reported a quarterly loss after taking a hefty charge to write down the value of loans on golf courses -- a hangover from the financial crisis. Its shares were up 6.4 percent to $23 before the open.

Boeing, the world's largest aerospace and defense company, is set to report a sharp decline in fourth-quarter profit. Other companies announcing results include Abbott Laboratories, Automatic Data Processing and Xerox.

European shares fell, weighed by the tech sector after a sharp post-results decline for mobile telecoms network gear maker Ericsson.

U.S. stocks edged lower on Tuesday, ending a five-day rally for the S&P 500, as talks to resolve Greece's debt crisis hit a snag and earnings from a number of blue-chips disappointed investors.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Google is streamlining privacy policies, changes effective Mar. 1

Youtube link for mobile viewing

Google has announced that it is in the process of streamlining its privacy policy, combining more than 60 current documents for various products into one easy to read version, with less of the "legal gloop" and complicated language.  Starting March 1, users will no longer have a different privacy statement for the various Google offerings.  This makes sense to us, especially if the promises of a document that's easy to read and understand hold true.  It likely makes sense for regulators as well, as Google has been under the microscope about it's practices and privacy concerns.

Google's also saying this will lead to a simpler and more immersive user experience, where information from the suite of Google services can be combined to provide more relevant information while using Google branded products.  In the video above, they give the example of how it can improve search results.  Of course, it will also help target the right advertisements to each of us at the same time.

Google also wants to make it clear that they are not changing the basic elements of their privacy policies.  They still won't sell your personal information, and they don't share it without your express permission "except in very limited circumstances like a valid court order."   On the other hand, data about you can now be used across all services where it wasn't (couldn't?) before.  This isn't neccessarily "evil," but it opens things up for a bit deeper discussion and review.  In the end, Google is still going to be Google, and it sounds like the company's really only trying to simplify things for end users like us -- and at the same time making it easier for its own products to use what access you've already granted them.

Oscar prospects span the century as noms near (AP)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. ? Prospective Academy Awards nominees have pretty much every decade of the last century covered, from the World War I epic "War Horse" through modern times with the family drama "The Descendants."

In between at Tuesday morning's nominations are such contenders as the 1920s and `30s tales "The Artist" and "Hugo," the 1950s movie-making story "My Week with Marilyn," the 1960s Deep South drama "The Help," the 1970s Cold War thriller "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and the Margaret Thatcher chronicle "The Iron Lady," spanning decades from her youth in World War II through her 1980s and `90s career as Britain's prime minister.

The Oscar nominations will be announced by Jennifer Lawrence at a 10-minute, predawn ceremony at the headquarters of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The best-picture prize on Oscar night could become a tussle between the top films at the Golden Globes: best drama recipient "The Descendants," starring George Clooney as a Hawaii father trying to keep his family together after a boating accident puts his wife in a coma; and best musical or comedy winner "The Artist," with Jean Dujardin as a silent-movie star whose career crumbles as talking pictures take over.

Clooney and Dujardin, who won the lead-actor Globes in their respective categories, are likely best-actor nominees at the Oscars.

Another performer with strong prospects is Globe dramatic actress winner Meryl Streep as Thatcher in "The Iron Lady." Two-time Oscar winner Streep would pad her record as the most-nominated actress, raising her total to 17 nominations, five more than Katharine Hepburn and Jack Nicholson, who are tied for second-place.

Also in the running: Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer as Mississippi maids in "The Help"; Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe and Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier in "My Week with Marilyn"; Leonardo DiCaprio as FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover in "J. Edgar"; Glenn Close as a woman masquerading as a male butler in "Albert Nobbs"; Brad Pitt as Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane in "Moneyball"; and Michael Fassbender as a sex addict in "Shame."

Winners of the 84th annual Oscars will be announced at a Feb. 26 ceremony aired live on ABC from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre, with Billy Crystal returning as host for the first time in eight years.

The most-beloved Oscar host of the last two decades, Crystal agreed to lead the show for the ninth time after Eddie Murphy bowed out in support of his pal, filmmaker Brett Ratner, who quit as Oscar producer amid the uproar over a gay slur he uttered in front of an audience at a screening of his and Murphy's comedy "Tower Heist."

Crystal's return could bump up the TV ratings for the show, which have been on a general decline over the last couple of decades.

What usually results in big TV ratings, though, is a blockbuster such as eventual Oscar champs "Titanic" or "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in the thick of the best-picture contest. More fans tune in because they have a stake in the outcome.

But there are no colossal films such as that in the mix this time. "The Help" and best-picture longshot "Bridesmaids" are solid hits, both taking in about $170 million domestically, while "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is closing on the $100 million mark. So far, other best-picture prospects are well under that level, ranging from $75 million for "Moneyball" to $12 million for "The Artist."

Gunmen kill 4 members of Iraqi security forces (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Gunmen killed two Iraqi soldiers and two police officers in a series of shootings on Saturday, officials said, in the latest attacks amid an escalating political crisis.

Suspected Sunni insurgents have frequently targeted Iraqi security forces to undermine public confidence in the Shiite-dominated government and its efforts to protect people. But the country is in the grips of a political crisis pitting the government against the largest Sunni-backed bloc, which has fueled fears that an ongoing spike in violence targeting primarily Shiites could nudge the country back toward sectarian conflict.

The two soldiers were killed when assailants fired on an Iraqi military patrol in the former al-Qaida stronghold city of Fallujah, according to police officials in the city some 40 miles (65 kilometers) west of Baghdad. Fallujah hospital officials confirmed the death toll.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

Another attack took place in the predominantly Sunni town of Hawija, a former insurgent stronghold located 150 miles (240 kilometers) north of Baghdad, when gunmen opened fire on the house of a police officer, killing one of his guards, said Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir.

Qadir, the police commander in the nearby city of Kirkuk, said the officer was unharmed in the attack.

In Baghdad, gunmen also killed a police officer late Saturday in a drive-by shooting, police and hospital officials said on condition of anonymity.

A wave of bombing attacks has killed at least 160 people ? most of them Shiite ? since the last American troops withdrew from Iraq in December.

First American EPL hat trick

updated 2:17 p.m. ET Jan. 21, 2012

LONDON - Clint Dempsey became the first American to score a hat trick in England's Premier League, helping Fulham rally from a halftime deficit to rout Newcastle 5-2 Saturday.

Dempsey put Fulham ahead 2-1 in the 59th minute with his 50th goal for the Cottagers, bundling in from 3 yards after Bobby Zamora's shot rebounded off goalkeeper Tim Krul.

He got his second in the 65th, slotting in a right-footed from 10 yards from Zamora's pass on a counterattack. Dempsey completed the scoring from Zamora's looping through pass in the 89th, splitting two defenders, heading the ball down to himself and taking two touches before a right-footed shot from 12 yards.

"We never found our rhythm in the first half but we began to get into their penalty area in the second half," Dempsey said. "Luckily the ball kept going in. We never took our foot off the gas and we took our chances."

Dempsey, a 28-year-old from Nacogdoches, Texas, has a career-best 15 goals this season, including nine in the Premier League. He had scored his first hat trick in England on Jan. 7 against Charlton in the third round of the FA Cup.

Fulham acquired him from Major League Soccer's New England Revolution in January 2007. On Friday, he was voted the U.S. Soccer Federation's male athlete for 2011, the second time he won the honor.

"Clint Dempsey is our top scorer," Fulham manager Martin Jol said. "He is doing what he does best. Clint scores goals."

Danny Murphy and Zamora converted penalty kicks for Fulham. Danny Guthrie put Newcastle ahead in the first half, and Hatem Ben Arfa cut the deficit to 4-2 in the 85th.

Madagascar's exiled president's return stopped (AP)

JOHANNESBURG ? An attempt by Madagascar's toppled president to end his exile in South Africa was thwarted in the air Saturday when his plane was forced to turn back after authorities on his Indian Ocean island closed their airspace to prevent his return, his spokesman said.

Peter Mann, a spokesman for Marc Ravalomanana in Johannesburg, said airline officials told him the plane would refuel in Mozambique before returning to South Africa, where Ravalomanana has been exiled since a populist former disc jockey toppled him with military backing in 2009.

In Madagascar, where thousands of Ravalomanana supporters had awaited him at the capital's airport, a government minister told reporters that Ravalomanana's rival, Andry Rajoelina, had issued a notice closing the country's main airports to prevent Ravalomanana's return.

Earlier Saturday, Ravalomanana, his wife, two aides, journalists and passengers not linked to him had boarded a commercial South African Airways flight in Johannesburg. Ravalomanana said he wanted to return to work for peace and democracy in his troubled homeland.

Boxwood blight invades North America

Devastating fungus has already stripped shrubbery in Europe and New Zealand

Web edition : 6:34 pm

Shrubs may be trembling by doorsteps across North America as an aggressive fungus disease of boxwood invades the continent.

Boxwood blight, caused by a Cylindrocladium fungus, was unknown to science before 2000 but has now spread through Europe and New Zealand. In October, U.S. authorities confirmed that the blight had jumped continents, with infections confirmed in North Carolina and Connecticut. By mid-January, with growers and pathologists on alert, the fungus had turned up in at least five more states ? Virginia, Maryland, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Oregon ? and British Columbia.

The blight starts with spots on leaves and black streaks on twigs. Within a few weeks, a plump shrub can turn into a clump of bare sticks.

?I?ve never poured diesel fuel on a boxwood, but if I did, that?s what it would look like,? says Lynn R. Batdorf, curator of the as-yet-uninfected boxwood collection at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C.

Younger plants die. Older plants do survive and regrow their leaves for at least several cycles of attack by the fungus, but ?it ruins completely your topiary or your hedge,? says plant pathologist B?atrice Henricot of the Royal Horticultural Society?s Garden Wisley in England.

Once the fungus, referred to as either C. pseudonaviculatum or C. buxicola, strikes a garden, pathologists recommend drastic measures to fight long-lasting fungal residue. In North Carolina, one grower burned 15,000 infected boxwood plants and 15,000 uninfected ones, burying the ashes and going out of business, says plant pathologist Kelly Ivors, based at North Carolina State University?s Mills River lab.

Just where this blight fungus originated is a puzzle. Since boxwood plants haven?t evolved much resistance to the fungus, it may come from an unfamiliar enemy outside the plants? native range, speculates plant pathologist Sharon M. Douglas of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven.

The fungus is particularly difficult to trace because all samples found so far belong to just two lineages of clones, adds her experiment station colleague Robert E. Marra. It?s hard match any particular outbreak with the region it came from because fungi in so many places are virtually identical.

Efforts to learn more about the fungus by coaxing it to reproduce sexually have failed. Like many fungi, it has two sets of mating-related genes, and needs to find a partner that differs sufficiently across both sets. ?It may be that this fungus is so successful it doesn?t need sex,? says Pedro Crous, director of the Fungal Biodiversity Centre in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Despite the fungus? success, fans may still find reasons to keep growing boxwood: low appeal to nibbling deer, a possible life span of more than 300 years, the cinnamon smell of its flowers, the leaf pungency that Oliver Wendell Holmes called ?the fragrance of eternity.? (Batdorf does acknowledge that ?other people with a different preference might compare it to cat urine.?)

For unshakeable enthusiasts, he points out that even after years of the blight, boxwood still grows in European gardens.

Video: 25 years later, mom cleared of son?s death

>>> it's every person parents worth nightmare. for one north carolina mother, the tragedy was made expo anybody nalley worse. for 25 years she was the only suspect in the case until recently. in a moment, that mother, elizabeth watkins , will join us in an exclusive interview. but first here's nbc 's michelle franzen .

>> reporter: for nearly 25 years elizabeth watkins lived under a cloud of suspicion, the prime suspect in the death of her own sun, nicholas. please say the 6-year-old's body was discovered by a neighbor this this wooded area in north carolina not far from the family's home nguyenston salem. the medical examiner's office conclude it was a homicide by strangulation. now investigators say a new look at the evidence shows the boy's marks on his neck were consistent with a dog attack , finally clearing watt kins's name, but thornts offered no apologies.

>> we did not apologize. our purpose was not to apologize. we have nothing to apologize for.

>> reporter: sheriff william shotman reopened the cold case seven years ago. police hat never made an arrest but considered watkins their only suspect. watkins told authorities she last saw her son leave to walk the pet collie and another dog. they were asked to reexamine the evidence using the latest photo graphic technology.

>> they decided that it was possible that dogs actually grabbed ahold of the boy's clothing so tight that he was strangled.

>> reporter: they concluded the boy's pet was in heat and attacked by other dogs, a case closed. but for watkins , there is little closure. last year she attended a memorial for nicholas, and for years her older son believed she was responsible for his death. her attorney says now thanks to investigators, she has a chance to reunite with him.

>> this sheriff's department did more than say i'm sorry. they went to him to show him all the evidence to explain his mother had no involvement with his brother's death.

>> reporter: for "today," michelle franzen , nbc news, new york.

>> elizabeth watkins and her attorney david freeman are with us this morning. good morning to both of you.

>> good morning.

>> good morning.

>> and, elizabeth , i know you were never formally charged, but as we mentioned you were the only suspect for so long hochl u are you feeling today now that you've been officially cleared. i imagine this moment is still bittersweet though.

>> it certainly is bittersweet, but i am very, very happy to finally be cleared of my son's death.

>> we mentioned the cause add real rift in your family. you recently reunited with your other son who for nearly 25 years thought you were involved in his younger brother 's death. tell us about that reunion.

>> it was the highlight of the day. we had not seen each other in almost 17 years. and all was forgotten in the past, and we're moving from this day forward for a new relationship. it was one of the best days of our lives .

>> and, elizabeth , i understand that you found out this week that you're a grandmother.

>> yes, i am. i have two grandsons, 11 and 4, and i'm very excited about meeting them. we're just so happy to have alex back in our family. it was mostly his side of the family, his biological father's side of the family that estranged from us. my family has been behind me 100% in their support. this is how i've been able to get through this. and my friends. but to have alex back with the family is -- i just can't tell you how happy we are about that.

>> you lost two sons that day.

>> yes, i did. we've never had any more christmases with our oldest son alex . no more birthdays for 25 years. and now i think a christmas won't go by and a birthday won't go by that we won't be together.

>> that is an unbelievable great outcome. david, i understand that over the years police have from time too time followed up on leads and theories, but did you know that the fbi had gotten involved and were coming close to a conclusion?

>> we had no idea. we found out last week, last tuesday when we received a phone call . coincidentally enough i was receiving a phone call from the sheriff's department when elizabeth and her husband were in my office, and i called them back and i said, have her come down in the following weekend. i've been talking to the fbi. we're going to show there's no involvement at all and she's to be exonerated of this horrible ee fence.

>> elizabeth , did you ever think you'd hear of those words, you're exonerated?

>> i've dreamed of it for many, many years because i've always known that was the truth. it just -- i was so happy. we're all so happy that i've been cleared. it makes our lives easier to live and we're just looking forward to moving on and having a wonderful relationship with alex , our oldest son and the two grandchildren.

>> and elizabeth , i know you want people to see this as a story of hopeful and what do you want people at home watching to walk away with?

>> i know there are other parents that are suspected of the murder of their child or the disappearance of their child. i would like to see the investigators look more into what the parents are saying. parents love their children more than anything else, and to have a parent have to go through any length of time of being suspected of wrongful doing in their child's death or disappearance is wrong. i think new things ought to beit in place to prevent this from happening to anyone else . i don't want to have to see anyone else go through 25 years of being a suspect and knowing you're not.

>> well, elizabeth watkins , we're so happy that you were able to reunite with your son alex . we are excited that you're going to be enjoying those grandkids. david freeman , thanks as well for joining us.

>> you're welcome.

>> thank you.

>> thank you.

>> and we're back. but first this is "today" on nbc .

Chevron appeals $18 billion ruling in Ecuador lawsuit (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO/QUITO (Reuters) ? Chevron Corp (CVX.N) has filed an appeal with Ecuador's National Court of Justice to review a judgment that the U.S. oil company pay $18 billion in damages for polluting the Amazon jungle.

Chevron was ordered by an Ecuadorian judge to pay the damages after a fraught legal battle that has lasted nearly two decades and looks like it will run longer.

The California oil company inherited the case when it bought Texaco a decade ago. Its appeal on Friday argues the lower courts violated Ecuador's constitution by refusing to take corrective action in response to what Chevron calls "extensive fraud and corruption" committed by the plaintiffs' lawyers and representatives.

Chevron said the original judgment, delivered last February by a lower Ecuadorian court in Lago Agrio, was based on faulty evidence and retroactive application of a law, while ignoring releases of liability granted to Texaco by Ecuador in the 1990s.

"Today's appeal gives the National Court of Justice an opportunity to correct the grave injustices that have occurred in this case," Hewitt Pate, Chevron's general counsel, said in a statement.

Plaintiffs have responded to the accusations by citing Chevron's own test data in documenting the pollution and arguing that Ecuador's release for Texaco did not prevent third parties from suing for damages.

In related litigation in New York, the plaintiffs also accuse the company of mishandling soil and water samples during the Lago Agrio trial by maintaining two different laboratories, based on testimony from a Chevron expert.

Along with the appeal in Ecuador, Chevron asked that it not be required to post a bond to prevent enforcement of the judgment during the appeal process, arguing that such a payment would violate Ecuador's obligations under an order issued last February by an international arbitration tribunal.

Pablo Fajardo, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said the next step would be to see whether the Lago Agrio appeals court requires Chevron to pay.

"If it asks (Chevron) to pay a bond, and if it pays the bond, then only the bond can stop us from carrying out the sentence," Fajardo told Reuters.

Asked if the plaintiffs were looking at any country in particular where it could seek to collect the damages, he said they would first await the decision on the bond. "We haven't done anything, we don't have any plans yet," Fajardo said.

The entire case may be reheard far from both Ecuador and the United States. The arbitration tribunal in The Hague, operating under a U.S.-Ecuador treaty, ordered Ecuador to take all measures at its disposal to suspend enforcement of the Lago Agrio judgment until the arbitrators have their say.

The tribunal is expected to rule any day on the question of whether or not it has jurisdiction in the case.
