A structured business networking meeting

Many business networking groups will tell you that no matter which of their groups you visit you will get the same experience, and that every networking group is the same. However, in reality do you really get the same experience no matter which group you attend? In my experience you don?t, and there are some key differences I?ve identified between networking groups:

The Welcome

First impressions count, and the way you are welcomed makes a huge difference to your perception of a business networking group. Are you greeted by friendly smiles? Is the signing in table well organised ? with receipts provided for any meeting fees? Is the person on the signing in desk wearing a name badge? I?ve been to some events where the signing in table was inside the room rather than outside, and the cash was laying on the table rather than in a cash tin. It?s essential when being involved with the running of a networking event to make sure that all the visitors are made to feel welcome.

The best events I?ve been to have several welcomers near the entrance to the event, who show visitors to the signing in table, then someone else takes over and shows you to a seat to put your bag and coat down, and then takes you to the tea and coffee station to get a drink (especially needed if it?s a breakfast meeting!), before introducing you to people who you might be able to form a business relationship with (more about that later).

Open Networking

Some events are unstructured. There is a regular event held in Nottingham for the IT industry where people just turn up in the evening and socialise. That?s great ? unless you are a shy kind of person who doesn?t find it easy to approach strangers. If people aren?t making an effort to actively approach strangers and speak to people who are on their own then it?s not going to be a great networking experience for everyone. Personally I always make the effort to speak to new people and approach people who are looking ?lost?.

Sometimes you will get people who corner you and try to sell to you, or get you to join their latest network marketing opportunity. Dealing with these types of people can sometimes be challenging because often they are nice people, but coming across as ?desperate? because of their desire to sell rather than build relationships. If you have any good tips for dealing with these type of people please feel free to add your comments below. One technique I?ve used is to politely say, ?I?d love to find out more, and there are a lot of people you must want to get around tonight, so can I have your business card and we can arrange a one to one meeting some time later??, and you can also say, ?You go this way, and I will go this way ? if I bump into anyone who might be interested ? I will send them over to you!?

The best way to use the open networking time is to find out what people do, arrange one-to-one meetings later, then pair them off with another person who they may be able to build a relationship up with. That way you can work the room more quickly and not get stuck in long drawn out conversations with people that could be done later. There is nothing worse than leaving a big networking event and only having made a few contacts. Success is always in the follow up of any networking event, so remember to make those calls and arrange follow up meetings to find out more about the other person?s business and start building up a business relationship that could lead to dream referrals!

Structured Meetings

Many events have a structured part of the meeting that may involve everyone standing up and speaking about their business for 60 seconds, or listening to a speaker. Other events involve a guest speaker who talks at some length about their background often sharing tips that may be useful for the business community. I tend to find events that have minimum speeches, and are more focused on generating business more effective.

I?ve been networking for years but until recently the only thing I got out of it was a few small jobs and a massive collection of business cards. I must have over 4,000 business cards! I only wish that I put them onto a spreadsheet because then I might get some use out of them.

However, since finding a really good structured group which I?ve since become highly involved with, I?ve found that my networking has really started bringing in the business. The main difference I?ve realised through studying the habits of effective networkers is that by focusing on helping others with their needs, you will naturally encourage others to look for business for you in return.

In Summary

By all means go to open networking events such as Chamber of Commerce events. Those can be very good for random contacts. It?s the luck of the draw who you will talk to. For best results do your research beforehand and identify who you want to talk to and what you want to accomplish from meeting them, do you want to arrange a one to one meeting later, or do you want to ask them advice on a particular topic? Don?t go in for the sell straightaway and bear in mind if they don?t know you and trust you they aren?t going to be likely to introduce you to their best client.

Find out who near you is successful in business networking and go along to one of the groups they are involved in. See if it?s right for you. Internet giant Google most recently found itself accused of secretly embedding cookies into Apple web browser Safari to obtain user data for advertising. The matter was revealed in a report from the Wall Street Journal and drew high profile criticism from Microsoft who took advantage of the occasion to highlight security advantages of the company?s Internet Explorer web browser.

?This type of tracking by Google is not new. The novelty here is that Google apparently circumvented the privacy protections built into Apple?s Safari browser in a deliberate, and ultimately, successful fashion,? stated Internet Explorer Business and Marketing GM Ryan Gavin in a blog post on the Windows Stream Blog last week.

JERUSALEM (AP) ? The U.S. and Britain on Sunday urged Israel not to attack Iran's nuclear program as the White House's national security adviser arrived in the region, reflecting growing international jitters that the Israelis are poised to strike.

In their warnings, both the U.S. joint chiefs of staff, Gen. Martin Dempsey, and British Foreign Minister William Hague said an Israeli attack on Iran would have grave consequences for the entire region and urged Israel to give international sanctions against Iran more time to work. Dempsey said an Israeli attack is "not prudent," and Hague said it would not be "a wise thing."

Both Israel and the West believe Iran is trying to develop a nuclear bomb ? a charge Tehran denies. But differences have emerged in how to respond to the perceived threat.

The U.S. and the European Union have both imposed harsh new sanctions targeting Iran's oil sector, the lifeline of the Iranian economy. With the sanctions just beginning to bite, they have expressed optimism that Iran can be persuaded to curb its nuclear ambitions.

On Sunday, Iran's Oil Ministry said it has halted oil shipments to Britain and France in an apparent pre-emptive blow against the European Union. The semiofficial Mehr news agency said the National Iranian Oil Company has sent letters to some European refineries with an ultimatum to either sign long-term contracts of two to five years or be cut off. The 27-nation EU accounts for about 18 percent of Iran's oil exports.

Israel has welcomed the sanctions. But it has pointedly refused to rule out military action and in recent weeks sent signals that its patience is running thin.

Israel believes a nuclear-armed Iran would be a threat to its very existence, citing Iran's support for Arab militant groups, its sophisticated arsenal of missiles capable of reaching Israel and its leaders' calls for the destruction of the Jewish state.

Last week, Israel accused Iran of being behind a string of attempted attacks on Israeli diplomats in India, Georgia and Thailand.

There is precedent for Israeli action. In 1981, the Israeli air force destroyed an unfinished Iraqi nuclear reactor. And in 2007, Israeli warplanes are believed to have destroyed a target that foreign experts think was an unfinished nuclear reactor in Syria.

Experts, however, have questioned how much an Israeli operation would accomplish. With Iran's nuclear installations scattered and buried deep underground, it is believed that an Iranian strike would set back, but not destroy, Iran's nuclear program.

There are also concerns Iran could fire missiles at Israel, get its local proxies Hezbollah and Hamas to launch rockets into the Jewish state, and cause global oil prices to spike by striking targets in the Gulf.

In an interview broadcast on CNN Sunday, Dempsey said Israel has the capability to strike Iran and delay the Iranians "probably for a couple of years. But some of the targets are probably beyond their reach."

He expressed concern that an Israeli attack could spark reprisals against U.S. targets in the Gulf or Afghanistan, where American forces are based.

"That's the question with which we all wrestle. And the reason that we think that it's not prudent at this point to decide to attack Iran," Dempsey said.

Describing Iran as a "rational actor," Dempsey said he believed that the international sanctions on Iran are beginning to have an effect. "For that reason, I think, that we think the current path we're on is the most prudent path at this point."

The arrival of White House National Security Adviser Tom Donilon was the latest in a series of high-level meetings between Israel and the U.S. Last month, Dempsey visited Israel, and next month, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to visit the White House.

Donilon was set to meet with Netanyahu late Sunday, and with Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Monday before leaving.

Asked whether he believed Israel could be deterred from striking, Dempsey said: "I'm confident that they understand our concerns, that a strike at this time would be destabilizing and wouldn't achieve their long-term objectives. But, I mean, I also understand that Israel has national interests that are unique to them."

Hague delivered a similar message in Britain. Speaking to the BBC, he said Britain was focused on pressuring Iran through diplomatic means.

"I don't think a wise thing at this moment is for Israel to launch a military attack on Iran," he said. "I think Israel like everyone else in the world should be giving a real chance to the approach we have adopted on very serious economic sanctions and economic pressure and the readiness to negotiate with Iran."

In a sign that the diplomatic pressure might be working, Iran's foreign minister said Sunday that a new round of talks with six world powers on the nuclear program will be held in Istanbul, Turkey. Ali Akbar Salehi didn't give any timing for the talks.

The last round of talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council plus Germany were held in Istanbul in January 2011 but ended in failure.

Anglo American shares were up 1.2 percent at 2,675 pence in early trading on the London Stock Exchange.

Chief Executive Cynthia Carroll said the group completed three major projects in 2011: the Kolomela iron ore mine in South Africa, the expansion of the Los Bronces copper mine in Chile and the Barro Alto nickel operation in Brazil.

Anglo American agreed in November to sell its 24.5 percent stake in Anglo American Sur, its copper assets in Chile, to Mitsubishi for $5.4 billion. That sale is being challenged by Codelco, Chile's state-owned copper miner, which has an option to take a 49 percent stake.

A more detailed look at the results shows that overall revenues swelled 11 percent to $36.5 billion.

The company also reported record operating profits for coal and diamonds. The operating profit for iron ore and manganese, the biggest sector within Anglo American, was up 23 percent.

Anglo American raised its stake in the De Beers diamond business to 85 percent in November when it bought the Oppenheimer family's shares. DeBeers' sales were up 26 percent last year to $7.4 billion

"Despite short term uncertainty persisting in the global economy, particularly in Europe, the longer term outlook for Anglo American's diversified mix of commodities remains strong," Carroll said.

rental income?Have you been putting this in your taxes?If so, it may be enough for you to qualify to take a mortgage out of your home.Although this is an expensive way to get cash, since you have to pay closing costs ? which can easily run into the thousands.So remember the # 1 rule in retirement: No loans

Change 4 Life (alcohol) - a load of humbug!

Little disclaimer and explanation ? I?m talking about GOOD WINE made without chemicals. C4L is encompassing all alcoholic drinks under one umbrella which is their big mistake!

While watching TV last night I was shocked to see an advert from Change 4 Life telling people that drinking 2 glasses of wine a day will give them cancer! How irresponsible is this? Not only is this absolute rubbish, but?it beggars belief?that somebody has decided to pay for it to go on national television!?Change 4 Life?is promoted by the NHS but there is no doubt that this completely false message was invented by central government ? exactly the same as the completely ficticious alcohol unit limit farce.

I?ve been on the Change 4 Life website this morning and seen a list of all the negative effects this ?excessive? drinking can cause, and frankly that is a load of rubbish as well. In fact drinking good wine?has a positive effect on people?s health in virtually all the areas they ?re telling us it is negative!? Below is the text taken from their website, with the truth in bold!

Regularly drinking over the lower-risk guidelines increases the chances of suffering from any of the conditions below:

• Cancer of the mouth, throat, oesophagus or larynx
• Actually good wine reduces the risks of cancer because the natural?antioxidants block the free radicals which cause damage to the cell?s nucleus.
• Breast cancer in women
• As Above
• Stroke
• Likelihood of a stroke is in fact?REDUCED by up to 50% .
• Heart disease or an irregular heartbeat, which can lead to heart attack

The major point that the government are missing here is the difference between good wine and mass produced alcoholic drinks infused with artificial additives. We?ve said for years that the excessive use of sulphites in both food and drink, including virtually all mass produced wines, is causing cancer. It is great that the government has finally admitted this, although they?re not brave enough to differentiate between quality well made natural products and the mass produced crap that dominates our high streets. Rather than risk the wrath of powerful global companies they?d rather mask it all in?one obscure misleading?generalisation! You?ll notice the supermarkets have all converted their own brand foods to ?no artificial additives or preservatives? precisely because they know the damage these additives are doing. However at the present time it simply isn?t possible to do it with their cheap factory made wines because they are mainly nasty chemicals with a little grape juice!

If the government?did publicly admit this we would have a national panic on our hands as people everywhere would stop consuming all these mass produced foods and drinks. The supply chain would collapse, and so would many global companies. So it is a delicate issue, but I still believe people?s health should be put before corporate profit. Interestingly parliament has an incredible wine cellar ? no supermarket plonk full of chemicals in there ? and the House of Commons?bar sources real ales from micro breweries produced without excessive chemicals ? what a coincidence!

Some of us are fortunate enough to have discovered the harm these chemical infused food and drinks are doing to us, and we?ve been able to change our eating and drinking habits.
